Baggage and dangerous goods

What am I allowed to bring with me?

Dangerous goods are items or substances that can cause a significant risk to health, safety, property or the environment. It is therefore forbidden to transport them as hand or checked baggage, except some items under specified conditions.

The provisions on dangerous goods placed on board by a passenger or crew members define the dangerous goods permitted to be transported as checked and / or hand luggage and / or dangerous goods the passenger or crew member can carry with him/her and the dangerous goods for which a prior approval of the carrier is required.

The passenger is obliged to read in advance the rules on permitted type and restrictions related to dangerous goods as well as regulations on prohibited items (dangerous goods) in the air transport and depending on the carrier.

The following items in checked baggage must not be transported:

  • Explosives (for example, ammunition, or pyrotechnic articles etc.),
Gases (e.g. Camping gas cylinders, blue flame lighters, liquid oxygen devices, etc.)
  • Flammable liquids (e.g. paints, acetone, fuel contained in equipment, lighter fuel, diluents, etc.)
  • Flammable solids, substances liable to spontaneous combustion or substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases (e.g. strike anywhere matches, solid fuels, etc.)
  • Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides (e.g. oxidizers, organic peroxides, etc.)
  • Toxic and infectious substances (e.g. insecticides, pesticides, viruses, bacteria, diagnostic samples, medical and biological waste, etc.)
  • Radioactive materials
  • Corrosives (e.g. mercury, acid batteries, etc.)
  • Miscellaneous dangerous goods: disabling substances (e.g. intoxicating and self-defence sprays, etc.), electro shockers (e.g. Taser, etc.), security equipment (e.g. safety briefcases, metal cash boxes, money bags, etc.), magnetized materials, etc.

This list is not exhaustive and includes only includes categories of forbidden items that have to be removed from the checked baggage.

If the safety control identifies objects defined as dangerous goods, international legal regulations will be applied (Annex 18 – Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air (Doc 9284). Such regulations specify exceptions to the transport of checked baggage.

Checked Baggage

    • The baggage submitted by a passenger at check-in is transported in the aircraft cargo hold.

The batteries should be removed from electronic devices and put in hand baggage.
The carrier determines the free-of-charge baggage amount, weight and dimensions. Everything that exceeds the set limit will have to be paid before the flight.

Hand Baggage

The carrier determines the weight and volume of hand luggage.
The categories of forbidden items in the passenger cabin, unless there is a written permission by the relevant state body include:

  • firearms and other items that could fire and cause serious injury,
  • sharp / sharp objects with blade or sharp tip that could cause serious injury,
  • tools that can be used for severe injuries or impose danger to the aircraft safety,
  • blunt objects that may cause serious injuries when someone is hit by them,
  • explosives, flammable substances and devices that can cause serious injuries or endanger the safety of aircraft,
  • chemical and toxic substances.

Passenger Warning

In order to protect air traffic passengers, in the year 2006 EU introduced limits concerning the amount of liquids allowed to be carried in hand baggage. These protective measures are applied at all EU, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland airports, and are also mandatory at the Croatian airports.
The liquids include: beverages, oils, perfumes, lotions, gels, mixtures of liquid and solid contents, containers under pressure such as shaving foams, gels, deodorants, perfumes and other items of similar contents.
Only liquids in individual packages of up to 100 ml or 100 g volume, place in transparent plastic bags, may be carried inside hand baggage. Maximal bag volume is 1 litre. A bag must be completely closed.

Passengers are allowed to:

  • carry the above mentioned liquids if they are packed in separate baggage. New regulations apply to hand baggage only,
  • carry in hand baggage liquids which might be needed for medical purposes during flight, as well as those needed special nutritional needs, including baby food. At request of person in charge, passenger shall prove the need to use them.
  • In the case of direct flight from any EU airport to Croatian destination, or the flight with transit at some other EU airport, liquids (drinks, perfumes…) which have been bought in shops behind boarding pass control and / or security check, may be carried on board. Those liquids must be put in transparent plastic bag (STEB).

In the year 2008, EC 820/2008 Regulation came into force, according to which passengers flying from Croatia and with transit at some EU and Switzerland airport, again are allowed to carry liquids into aircrafts, provided that they are bought in airport Duty Free Shops, after security check and boarding pass control. This Regulation refers to Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Rijeka, Pula and Zagreb airports. Stated permission is valid for goods purchased within 36 hours from the start and packed in transparent plastic bag (STEB). Bag must be sealed, so that any attempt to open it and affect its contents must be visible during the period it is not allowed.

Passenger and Hand Baggage Security Check

At passenger and hand baggage security check, the passengers are required to:

  • report all liquids;
  • separately present laptops and other electronic devices (mp3 players, mobile phones etc.);
  • take off their coats and / or jackets that will be checked as a separate piece of hand baggage.

Excess or Special Baggage

Please check with your carrier for conditions when you plan to take more than the allowable amount of baggage or if you plan to carry any special luggage.
